Where are you wandering and where are you coming from and where are you straying to and what are you bewildered by while you have among you the progeny of your Prophet – they who are the guides towards right and speakers of truth?.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) addresses a crucial question to the Muslims of his time and serves as a timeless reminder for all Muslims. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asks,
Where are you wandering and where are you coming from and where are you straying to and what are you bewildered by while you have among you the progeny of your Prophet – they who are the guides towards right and speakers of truth?
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (tateehoon) "تَتِيهُونَ" means "wandering" or "straying." It refers to aimlessly wandering away from the path of guidance. (tu'tawna) "تُؤْتَوْنَ" means "coming from" or "returning." It signifies the source or origin from which one is coming. (tu'fakoon) "تُؤْفَكُونَ" means "straying" or "deviating." It implies going astray from the right path. (ta'mahoon) "تعْمَهُونَ" means "bewildered" or "confused." It signifies being lost or perplexed.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) questions the Muslims about their aimless wandering, their source of guidance, their deviation from the truth, and their confusion, while they have among them the progeny of the Prophet (ﷺ) who are the guides towards right and speakers of truth. This statement emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who possess profound knowledge and understanding of the teachings of Islam.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:181), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And of those We created are a people who guide by truth and thereby do justice.
This verse highlights the existence of individuals who are appointed by Allah to guide people towards truth and justice. The Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) are among those who possess this divine guidance and knowledge.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:73), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.
This verse highlights the role of the chosen leaders in guiding people according to the command of Allah. The Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) are the inheritors of this divine leadership and guidance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds the Muslims that they have the privilege of having the progeny of the Prophet (ﷺ) among them. These noble individuals possess the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of the true teachings of Islam. They are the guides towards right and the speakers of truth. By seeking their guidance and following their teachings, Muslims can avoid aimless wandering, find their source of guidance, stay on the right path, and overcome confusion.
The consequences of neglecting the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) can be seen throughout history. Muslims who deviated from the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) have faced division, confusion, and the loss of the true essence of Islam. On the other hand, those who have adhered to the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ) have found guidance, unity, and a deeper understanding of the religion.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we as Muslims should recognize the importance of seeking guidance from the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should strive to learn from their teachings, follow their example, and seek their intercession in our spiritual journey. By doing so, we can avoid aimless wandering, find true guidance, and attain a deeper understanding of the truth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to recognize and follow the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
