There is no rank higher than good etiquette.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاحَسَبَ أرفَعُ مِنَ الأدبِ۔

This can be translated into English as,

There is no rank higher than good etiquette.

In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance and superiority of good manners and etiquette.

The word (adab) "أدب" in this Hadith refers to manners, behavior, and etiquette. It encompasses the way we conduct ourselves in our interactions with others, both in speech and action. Good etiquette involves showing respect, kindness, and consideration towards others, regardless of their social status or background.

The significance of good etiquette is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and refraining from ridiculing or insulting them. It reminds us that judging others based on superficial criteria is not only unbecoming but also goes against the teachings of Islam. Good etiquette requires us to be mindful of our words and actions, ensuring that they reflect the values of kindness, empathy, and understanding.

Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages us to choose our words wisely and speak in the best possible manner. It reminds us that our speech has the power to either unite or divide people. By practicing good etiquette in our speech, we can foster harmony and understanding among individuals and communities.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that good etiquette is not merely a superficial display of politeness, but rather a reflection of one's character and inner values. It is a manifestation of the teachings of Islam, which emphasize the importance of treating others with kindness, respect, and compassion.

When we embody good etiquette in our interactions, we contribute to the creation of a harmonious and inclusive society. Our words and actions have the power to inspire and uplift others, fostering a sense of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. Conversely, neglecting good etiquette can lead to discord, misunderstandings, and strained relationships.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, exemplified the highest standards of good etiquette throughout his life. His interactions with people, whether they were his friends, family, or even his adversaries, were marked by kindness, patience, and respect. His teachings and actions serve as a timeless example for Muslims to follow in their pursuit of good etiquette.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that there is no rank higher than good etiquette. It emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect, kindness, and empathy, as exemplified by the teachings of Islam. By embodying good etiquette in our interactions, we contribute to the creation of a harmonious and inclusive society, reflecting the values of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in embodying the principles of good etiquette in our daily lives.
