اَلإيمانُ والعِلْمُ (وَ العمَلُ) أخَوانِ تَوْأمانِ، ورَفيقانِ لا يَفْتَرِقانِ۔
Faith and knowledge (or action) are twin brothers and companions who do not part ways.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Faith)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Faith and knowledge (or action) are twin brothers and companions who do not part ways.
This beautiful Hadith highlights the inseparable relationship between faith and knowledge, emphasizing their interdependence and mutual reinforcement.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (إيمان) "Faith" refers to a deep-rooted belief in the heart, encompassing both belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His divine attributes, as well as trust and reliance on Him. (عِلْم) "Knowledge" refers to the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, particularly in matters of religion and spirituality. It encompasses the knowledge of the Quran, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and the wisdom passed down by the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who lack it. It highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and its role in strengthening one's faith.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights the elevated status of those who combine faith with knowledge. It signifies that true believers are not only those who have faith but also those who actively seek knowledge and apply it in their lives.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that faith and knowledge are inseparable. Faith without knowledge can be weak and susceptible to doubts and misconceptions. On the other hand, knowledge without faith can be devoid of spirituality and moral guidance. It is through the integration of faith and knowledge that one attains a balanced and comprehensive understanding of Islam.
When faith and knowledge are combined, they act as twin brothers, supporting and reinforcing each other. Faith provides the foundation upon which knowledge is built, while knowledge enriches and deepens one's faith. For example, when we study the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), our faith is strengthened as we gain a deeper understanding of Allah's guidance and His mercy.
Furthermore, faith and knowledge are described as companions who do not part ways. This signifies the enduring nature of their relationship. A person of faith should constantly seek knowledge to enhance their understanding and practice of Islam. Similarly, a person of knowledge should always strive to strengthen their faith and spiritual connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The synergy between faith and knowledge is crucial for personal growth, as well as for the betterment of the Muslim community as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the inseparable relationship between faith and knowledge. Faith provides the foundation, while knowledge enriches and strengthens one's understanding and practice of Islam. By combining faith and knowledge, Muslims can attain a comprehensive understanding of their religion and lead a balanced and fulfilling life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with unwavering faith and the pursuit of knowledge that is pleasing to Him.
