(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the profound impact of remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) on an individual's heart, intellect, and mind. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (dhakara) "ذَكَرَ" in Arabic means "to remember" or "to mention." It refers to the act of consciously bringing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to mind, acknowledging His presence, and reflecting upon His attributes and teachings. The act of remembrance is not limited to mere verbal recitation, but it encompasses a state of mindfulness and spiritual connection with the Divine.

When one remembers Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Hadith states that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) enlivens their heart, illuminates their intellect, and their mind. This implies that the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has a transformative effect on the inner dimensions of a person.

The heart, in Islamic spirituality, represents the core of one's being, the seat of emotions, and the source of spiritual insight. When a person remembers Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sincerely, their heart is enlivened with spiritual vitality, purity, and tranquility. It becomes receptive to divine guidance, and the light of faith illuminates their path.

The intellect, or (‘aql) "عَقْلَ" in Arabic, refers to the faculty of reasoning and understanding. When one engages in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), their intellect is enlightened with divine wisdom, clarity, and discernment. They gain a deeper understanding of the purpose of life, the nature of truth, and the path to righteousness.

The mind, or (lubb) "لُبَّ" in Arabic, encompasses the innermost thoughts, inclinations, and intentions. When a person remembers Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), their mind is purified from negative thoughts, doubts, and distractions. They develop a heightened awareness of their actions and intentions, striving to align them with the teachings of Islam.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the profound impact of remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) on the heart, intellect, and mind. For instance, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28):

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.

This verse highlights that the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) brings tranquility and assurance to the hearts of believers. It strengthens their faith, dispels doubts, and instills a sense of inner peace.

In Surah Al-Anfal (8:29), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

This verse indicates that the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) leads to the development of taqwa (God-consciousness) and the attainment of divine guidance. It serves as a criterion for distinguishing between right and wrong, and it facilitates the forgiveness and purification of one's sins.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is not a mere ritualistic act, but a transformative spiritual practice. It has the power to enliven our hearts, illuminate our intellects, and purify our minds.

By remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sincerely and consistently, we can experience a profound connection with the Divine, gain spiritual clarity, and align our thoughts, intentions, and actions with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember Him and benefit from the blessings that come with it.
