اَلمُداراةُ أحْمَدُ الخِلالِ۔
Being amicable is the most praiseworthy attribute.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Amicableness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-mudaratah ahmadu al-khilal." This can be translated as,
Being amicable is the most praiseworthy attribute.
In this exegesis, we will delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word "mudaratah" refers to being amicable, friendly, and kind in one's interactions with others. It encompasses qualities such as compassion, empathy, and understanding. This Hadith highlights the importance of fostering harmonious relationships and treating others with kindness and respect.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of being amicable in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and promoting unity among believers. By being amicable, we can bridge gaps and foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah says,
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse highlights the role of Satan in sowing discord and division among people. By being amicable, we can counteract the influence of Satan and promote peace and harmony.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being amicable not only in our interactions with others but also within ourselves. By cultivating a sense of inner peace and tranquility, we can radiate positivity and kindness towards others. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:208),
O you who have believed, enter into peace completely and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
Being amicable has far-reaching consequences in our lives. It strengthens our relationships, promotes unity, and creates a positive environment for personal and spiritual growth. When we treat others with kindness and respect, we inspire them to do the same, creating a ripple effect of goodness in society.
Moreover, being amicable allows us to resolve conflicts peacefully and avoid unnecessary disputes. It enables us to engage in constructive dialogue and find common ground, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:46),
And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, 'We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.'
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being amicable in our interactions with others. By embodying this attribute, we can foster unity, resolve conflicts, and create a positive and harmonious environment. Let us strive to be amicable Muslims, following the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Ahl al-Bayt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate this praiseworthy attribute and spread peace and kindness in our lives.
