(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

طالبُ الأدَبِ أحزَمُ مِنْ طالِبِ الذَّهبِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking good etiquette and manners over seeking material wealth. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (talib) "طالبُ" in Arabic refers to a seeker or a student. It implies someone who is actively pursuing knowledge or a particular goal. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares two types of seekers: the seeker of good etiquette (أدَبِ) and the seeker of gold (الذَّهبِ).

The word (ahzam) "أحزَمُ" means wiser or more intelligent. It conveys the idea that the seeker of good etiquette possesses a higher level of wisdom and intelligence compared to the seeker of gold. This implies that acquiring good manners and etiquette is a mark of true intelligence and wisdom.

The Quran supports this concept of seeking good etiquette and manners as a priority over material wealth. In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking the Hereafter while not neglecting the worldly responsibilities. It encourages Muslims to do good and maintain good manners in their pursuit of both spiritual and worldly success. It reminds us that seeking material wealth should not lead to corruption or neglect of our moral obligations.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of good manners and righteous conduct in Islam. It teaches us that true nobility and superiority are not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly possessions, but rather on righteousness and good character. The one who seeks good etiquette and manners is considered more noble and superior in the sight of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we understand that seeking good etiquette and manners is a reflection of a person's inner qualities and values. It demonstrates their commitment to righteousness, humility, and respect for others. The seeker of good etiquette understands the importance of treating others with kindness, compassion, and fairness.

On the other hand, the seeker of gold may be consumed by the pursuit of material wealth, often neglecting the development of their character and moral values. They may prioritize personal gain over the well-being of others, leading to a lack of empathy and compassion.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us through this Hadith that true wisdom lies in seeking good etiquette and manners. It is through the cultivation of these qualities that we can attain true success and happiness in this world and the Hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the seeker of good etiquette is wiser than the seeker of gold. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the development of our character and moral values over the pursuit of material wealth. By seeking good etiquette and manners, we not only attain wisdom and intelligence but also embody the true essence of Islam. May Allah guide us all to be seekers of good etiquette and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
