لامَرْكَبَ أجْمَحُ مِنَ اللَّجاجِ۔
There is no mount more insubordinate than stubbornness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stubbornness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لامَرْكَبَ أجْمَحُ مِنَ اللَّجاجِ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no mount more insubordinate than stubbornness.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) uses the word (al-lajaj) "اللَّجاجِ" to describe stubbornness.
The word (al-lajaj) "اللَّجاجِ" refers to a state of being stubborn, obstinate, or rebellious. It implies a refusal to accept guidance or change one's position, even when presented with clear evidence or reasoning. Stubbornness can manifest in various aspects of life, such as personal beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the dangers of stubbornness and its consequences. Allah says in verse 18,
Deaf, dumb and blind, so they will not return [to the right path].
This verse highlights the spiritual blindness and deafness that results from stubbornness. Those who persist in their stubbornness are unable to perceive the truth and are deprived of guidance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 170, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the stubborn ones, saying,
And when it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.' Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
This verse emphasizes the irrationality of blindly following the traditions of one's forefathers without seeking knowledge or guidance. It highlights the importance of intellectual independence and the willingness to question inherited beliefs.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in his Hadith draws our attention to the destructive nature of stubbornness. When we refuse to let go of our preconceived notions, we become like an unruly mount that resists being tamed. This stubbornness hinders our personal growth, prevents us from seeking knowledge, and obstructs our spiritual development.
Stubbornness can lead to disastrous consequences in both individual and collective spheres. It can create divisions within families, communities, and even nations. It can hinder progress and prevent the resolution of conflicts. Moreover, it can distance us from the path of righteousness and prevent us from attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us against the dangers of stubbornness. He encourages us to be open-minded, receptive to guidance, and willing to change our perspectives when presented with valid arguments and evidence. By doing so, we can overcome the shackles of stubbornness and embark on a journey of self-improvement and spiritual enlightenment.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their own attitudes and behaviors. It urges us to abandon stubbornness and embrace intellectual humility, seeking knowledge and guidance from authentic sources. By doing so, we can align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and overcome our own stubbornness, and may He guide us on the straight path.
