مَنْ سامَحَ نَفْسَهُ فيما يُحِبُّ أتْعَبَهُ فيما يَكْرَهُ۔
One who is lenient with his soul in that which he loves is troubled by it in that which he hates.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ سامَحَ نَفْسَهُ فيما يُحِبُّ أتْعَبَهُ فيما يَكْرَهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the concept of self-control and self-discipline. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to better understand its enlightening message.
The word (samaha) "سامَحَ" means to be lenient, forgiving, or gentle with oneself. It implies having the ability to control one's desires and emotions. The word (nafsahu) "نَفْسَهُ" refers to one's soul or self. It represents the innermost essence of a person, including their thoughts, desires, and emotions. The phrase (fima yuhibbu) "فيما يُحِبُّ" means in that which he loves, indicating actions or behaviors that one is inclined towards or finds pleasurable. On the other hand, the phrase (fima yakrah) "فيما يَكْرَهُ" means in that which he hates, referring to actions or behaviors that one dislikes or finds burdensome.
To further comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, (Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear)
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَاۚ
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not burden us with more than we can handle. It highlights the importance of self-control and moderation in our actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 32, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way)
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَاۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا
This verse warns against indulging in forbidden desires and urges us to exercise self-restraint. It serves as a reminder that giving in to our base desires can lead to negative consequences and spiritual turmoil.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the importance of self-discipline and self-control in our lives. When we are lenient with ourselves in fulfilling our desires, we may find temporary pleasure or satisfaction. However, this leniency can lead to difficulties and hardships in areas that we dislike or find burdensome. For example, if we indulge in excessive eating, we may face health issues or struggle with self-control in other aspects of our lives.
Conversely, if we exercise self-discipline and restrain ourselves from indulging in our desires, we may face initial challenges or sacrifices. However, this self-control will lead to ease and tranquility in areas that we dislike or find burdensome. For instance, if we resist the temptation to procrastinate and instead prioritize our responsibilities, we will experience a sense of accomplishment and peace of mind.
This Hadith encourages us to reflect on our actions and make conscious choices that align with our values and principles. It reminds us that self-control and self-discipline are essential for leading a balanced and fulfilling life. By being mindful of our desires and making choices that prioritize our long-term well-being, we can avoid unnecessary hardships and find peace in our hearts.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of self-control and self-discipline. It urges us to be lenient with ourselves in that which we love, but also cautions us about the consequences of indulging in our desires. By exercising self-restraint and making choices that align with our values, we can avoid unnecessary hardships and find peace and contentment in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to practice self-discipline and lead a balanced life.
