لاتَتَّبِعِ الهَوى، فَمَنْ تَبِعَ هَواهُ اِرْتَبَكَ۔
Do not follow [your] vain desire, for whoever follows his vain desire becomes disconcerted.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to refrain from blindly following their own whims and desires. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense wisdom and knowledge, advises us against being slaves to our own vain desires. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its significance and the lessons we can derive from it.
The key words in this Hadith are (vain desire) "الهَوى" and (disconcerted) "اِرْتَبَكَ". "الهَوى" refers to one's base desires, inclinations, and whims that are not guided by reason or divine guidance. It encompasses the desires of the ego and the temptations of the worldly life. "اِرْتَبَكَ" conveys the state of confusion, agitation, and disarray that one experiences when they succumb to their vain desires.
To understand the gravity of following one's vain desires, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of following our desires:
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking divine guidance and not allowing our own desires to lead us astray.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the fate of those who follow their vain desires:
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
This verse highlights the severe consequences of making one's desires the object of worship, leading to a state of spiritual blindness and being deprived of divine guidance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and vigilant in their actions. By following our vain desires, we become disconcerted and lose sight of the path of righteousness. Our desires can cloud our judgment, leading us away from the teachings of Islam and causing us to engage in sinful behavior.
For instance, if a person is driven by their desire for wealth and material possessions, they may resort to dishonest means such as fraud or exploitation to fulfill their desires. This not only goes against the principles of justice and honesty in Islam but also leads to a state of inner turmoil and dissatisfaction. Similarly, if one is driven by their desire for power and authority, they may engage in oppression and injustice, causing harm to others and disrupting the harmony of society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice encourages Muslims to rise above their base desires and seek guidance from the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). By adhering to the principles of Islam and aligning our actions with the divine commandments, we can overcome the disarray caused by following our vain desires.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to refrain from blindly following their own whims and desires. By seeking guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and adhering to the teachings of Islam, we can overcome the confusion and disarray caused by following our vain desires. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to resist the temptations of our base desires and to always strive for righteousness.
