اَلمُؤْمِنُ حَذِرٌ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ أبَداً يَخافُ البَلاءَ ويَرجُو رَحمَةَ رَبِّهِ۔
A believer is wary of his sins, always fearing chastisement and hoping for the mercy of his Lord.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of a believer being cautious and mindful of their sins. The word (believer) "مُؤْمِنُ" refers to a person who has faith in Allah and His Messenger, and strives to follow the teachings of Islam. The word (wary) "حَذِرٌ" implies being vigilant and cautious, constantly aware of one's actions and their consequences. The believer is always conscious of their sins, recognizing their gravity and the potential consequences they may face.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two key attitudes that a believer should possess. Firstly, the believer should fear chastisement, understanding the severity of their sins and the potential punishment that may await them. This fear serves as a deterrent, motivating the believer to avoid sinful actions and seek forgiveness from Allah. Secondly, the believer should have hope in the mercy of their Lord. Despite their sins, they trust in Allah's infinite mercy and forgiveness, seeking His compassion and redemption.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:135):
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness for sins and not persisting in wrongdoing. It encourages believers to be mindful of their actions and to turn to Allah in repentance.
Another verse that aligns with the teachings of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Zumar (39:53):
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse reassures believers that no matter how great their sins may be, Allah's mercy is vast and all-encompassing. It encourages believers to have hope in Allah's forgiveness and to seek His mercy.
The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-accountability for believers. It reminds us to be cautious and mindful of our actions, recognizing the potential consequences of our sins. This awareness should motivate us to fear the chastisement of Allah and seek His forgiveness. At the same time, it instills hope in the mercy of our Lord, reminding us that Allah's forgiveness is limitless and that He is always ready to accept our repentance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, provides this guidance to help believers navigate the challenges of life and strive for spiritual growth. By being wary of our sins, fearing chastisement, and hoping for Allah's mercy, we can continuously improve ourselves and strengthen our relationship with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be mindful of our actions, seek His forgiveness, and attain His mercy.
