كُلُّ امْرِء يَلْقى ما عَمِلَ، ويُجْزى بِما صَنَعَ۔
Every person will face that which he did and is rewarded for that which he performs.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Every person will face that which he did and is rewarded for that which he performs.
This Hadith emphasizes the concept of accountability and retribution in the Hereafter. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (amr) "امْرِء" in the Hadith refers to every individual, regardless of their gender or social status. It encompasses all human beings, emphasizing the universality of this principle. The word (yalqaa) "يَلْقَى" means to encounter or face, indicating that every person will inevitably face the consequences of their actions. This highlights the concept of individual responsibility and accountability in Islam.
The phrase (ma 'amilah) "مَا عَمِلَ" refers to one's deeds and actions. It encompasses both the good and bad deeds performed by an individual throughout their life. This implies that every action, whether big or small, will be taken into account on the Day of Judgment. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of every single action we undertake, and nothing escapes His knowledge.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:13),
And We have fastened every person's deeds to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a book which he will find wide open.
This verse reinforces the idea that our deeds are recorded and will be presented to us on the Day of Judgment.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Zalzalah (99:7-8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
These verses highlight the precision and fairness of Allah's judgment. Even the smallest of actions, whether good or bad, will not go unnoticed and will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment.
The second part of the Hadith states,
and is rewarded for that which he performs.
This implies that not only will individuals face the consequences of their actions, but they will also be rewarded or punished accordingly. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Nisa (4:40),
Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.
This verse assures us that Allah's justice is absolute and that He will reward every good deed, no matter how small it may seem.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions and to strive for righteousness. It motivates us to perform good deeds and avoid sinful acts, knowing that we will be held accountable for our choices. It also instills a sense of responsibility and self-reflection, as we are reminded that our actions have consequences both in this world and the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of individual accountability and retribution in Islam. It reminds us that every person will face the consequences of their actions and will be rewarded or punished accordingly. This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the importance of deeds and the fairness of Allah's judgment. As Muslims, we should strive to perform righteous actions and seek forgiveness for our shortcomings, knowing that our actions will ultimately determine our fate in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
