Do not waste any of the blessings that Allah, the Glorified, has blessed you with, and let the effect of what He has blessed you with be visible on you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of not wasting any of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It urges us to appreciate and acknowledge these blessings, and to ensure that their effects are visible in our lives.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining some key words. The word (ni'mah) "نِعْمَةً" refers to the blessings and favors that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation. These blessings can be both tangible and intangible, encompassing various aspects of our lives such as health, wealth, knowledge, and guidance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to (la tudhi') "لاتُضِعْ" or waste these blessings. This implies that we should not neglect or disregard the blessings we have been granted. Instead, we should value and utilize them in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Hadith further states that the effects of these blessings should be visible upon us. This means that we should not only recognize and appreciate the blessings, but also allow them to manifest in our actions, behavior, and character. The blessings should have a transformative impact on our lives, guiding us towards righteousness and benefiting those around us.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80):
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all aspects of our lives. It reminds us to be steadfast and firm in our faith, and to seek His blessings and sustenance. By acknowledging and utilizing the blessings bestowed upon us, we can strengthen our relationship with Allah and fulfill our purpose in this world.
Another relevant verse is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77):
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse emphasizes the balance between seeking the rewards of the Hereafter and fulfilling our responsibilities in this world. It encourages us to utilize the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah to do good and avoid corruption. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society.
Reflecting upon the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that gratitude and appreciation for the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) are essential. We should not take these blessings for granted, but rather utilize them in a manner that reflects our gratitude and devotion to Allah. By doing so, we can lead a righteous life and fulfill our purpose as Muslims.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to appreciate and utilize His blessings, and may He make the effects of these blessings visible in our lives. Ameen.
