— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

طُوبى لِمَنْ خَلا مِنَ الغِلِّ صَدْرُهُ وسَلِمَ مِنَ الغِشِّ قَلْبُهُ۔

This can be translated as:

Blessed is the one whose chest is void of rancour and whose heart is safe from deception.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (ghill) "غِلِّ" refers to rancor, animosity, or ill feelings towards others. It is a negative emotion that can poison the heart and lead to conflicts and disputes. The word (ghish) "غِشِّ" refers to deception, fraud, or deceit. It signifies the act of misleading or betraying others, which is a grave sin.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10):

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. It encourages us to resolve conflicts and disputes in a peaceful manner, without harboring any ill feelings in our hearts.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against deception in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42):

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

This verse highlights the importance of honesty and integrity in our dealings with others. It reminds us to always speak the truth and not to deceive or betray others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith is teaching us the virtues of having a pure heart and a sincere character. He praises those who have a chest free from rancor, indicating that they have let go of grudges and resentments towards others. This is a reflection of their ability to forgive, reconcile, and maintain harmonious relationships with their fellow Muslims.

Moreover, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having a heart that is safe from deception. Such a heart is filled with honesty, trustworthiness, and sincerity. It is a heart that does not engage in deceitful practices or betray the trust of others. This teaches us the significance of maintaining our integrity and being truthful in all our actions and interactions.

The consequences of embodying the teachings of this Hadith are profound. When we let go of rancor and forgive others, we free ourselves from the burden of negative emotions. This leads to inner peace and tranquility. Similarly, when we refrain from deception and maintain our integrity, we gain the trust and respect of others. This fosters strong bonds of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim community.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to purify our hearts from rancor and deception. We should seek forgiveness, reconcile with others, and let go of any grudges or ill feelings. Additionally, we should always be honest, trustworthy, and sincere in our words and actions. By embodying these qualities, we can attain the blessings and rewards promised in this Hadith.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate pure hearts and sincere characters. May He bless us with unity, forgiveness, and honesty in our relationships with others. And may He guide us to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the noble Quran. Ameen.
