عَلى قَدْرِ الحَياءِ تَكُونُ العِفَّةُ۔
To the extent of modesty, there is chastity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Chastity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عَلى قَدْرِ الحَياءِ تَكُونُ العِفَّةُ۔
This can be translated as,
To the extent of modesty, there is chastity.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. (hayaa) "حَياءِ" refers to modesty, shyness, and a sense of shame. It is a noble characteristic that prevents one from engaging in indecent or immoral behavior. (iffah) "عِفَّةُ" refers to chastity, purity, and the preservation of one's honor and integrity.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nur (24:30-31),
Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which appears thereof and to wrap their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women.
These verses emphasize the importance of modesty and chastity for both men and women. Modesty is not limited to physical appearance but encompasses one's behavior, speech, and interactions. It is a shield that protects us from falling into sinful acts and preserves our honor and dignity.
Modesty and chastity go hand in hand. When one possesses modesty, they are more likely to uphold their chastity. Modesty acts as a barrier that prevents one from engaging in immoral actions, such as illicit relationships, indecent speech, or immodest behavior. It instills a sense of self-respect and self-control, leading to a virtuous and honorable life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the correlation between modesty and chastity in this Hadith. He teaches us that the level of our modesty directly impacts the level of our chastity. The more modest we are, the more likely we are to maintain our chastity and protect ourselves from the temptations of this world.
Modesty and chastity have far-reaching consequences in our lives. They not only safeguard our individual purity but also contribute to the overall moral fabric of society. When individuals uphold modesty and chastity, it creates an environment of respect, trust, and decency. It promotes healthy relationships, preserves family values, and fosters a society built on moral principles.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate modesty in all aspects of our lives. We should be mindful of our actions, words, and thoughts, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can attain a higher level of chastity and protect ourselves from the moral pitfalls of this world.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound connection between modesty and chastity. Modesty acts as a shield that preserves our honor and integrity, while chastity ensures the purity of our actions and intentions. By upholding modesty, we can safeguard our chastity and lead a virtuous life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to embody these noble qualities and protect us from the temptations of this world.
