(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Forebearing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ حَلُمَ أُكْرِمَ۔" This can be translated into English as,

One who shows forbearance is honoured.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of forbearance and its connection to honor and respect.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (halum) "حَلُمَ" refers to forbearance, patience, and tolerance. It is the ability to control one's emotions and reactions in the face of adversity or provocation. (ukrima) "أُكْرِمَ" means to be honored, respected, and esteemed. It signifies the elevation of one's status and the recognition of their virtues.

To further understand the significance of forbearance and its connection to honor, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and forbearance in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah says,

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the correlation between patience and divine assistance. Those who exhibit forbearance are granted the support and guidance of Allah.

In Surah Al-Qasas (28:54), Allah states,

Indeed, those who are patient will be given their reward without account.

This verse emphasizes that the reward for patience is immeasurable and will be granted to individuals without any limit. It further reinforces the idea that forbearance is a virtue that leads to honor and reward.

The consequences of practicing forbearance are profound. When a person shows patience and restraint in difficult situations, they earn the respect and admiration of others. Their ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity sets them apart and elevates their status in the eyes of others. This honor is not limited to worldly recognition but extends to the spiritual realm as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows His blessings and mercy upon those who demonstrate forbearance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the virtue of forbearance throughout his life. Despite facing numerous challenges and betrayals, he remained patient and forgiving. His forbearance in the face of adversity earned him the respect and admiration of both his followers and his enemies.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating forbearance in our own lives. In times of hardship, instead of reacting impulsively, we should strive to exercise patience and control our emotions. By doing so, we not only elevate our own character but also inspire others to follow the path of forbearance.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

One who shows forbearance is honoured,

highlights the virtue of patience and its connection to honor and respect. By practicing forbearance, we not only earn the admiration of others but also receive the blessings and support of Allah. Let us strive to embody this noble trait in our daily lives and seek the honor that comes with it. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to be patient and forbearing in all circumstances.
