اَلْجاهِلُ مَيِّتٌ بَيْنَ الأحْياءِ۔
An ignorant person is [like the] dead among the living.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الجاهل ميت بين الأحياء
which translates to
An ignorant person is [like the] dead among the living.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental state of ignorance and emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us first explore the key words used. "الجاهل" refers to an ignorant person, someone who lacks knowledge and understanding. This ignorance is not limited to a lack of information, but rather encompasses a lack of insight, wisdom, and spiritual awareness. The word "ميت" means dead, indicating a state of lifelessness, stagnation, and detachment from the reality of existence. Finally, "بين الأحياء" refers to being among the living, implying that the ignorant person is physically present but spiritually disconnected from the vibrant and enlightened world around them.
This Hadith finds support in several verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22),
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) highlights the spiritual deadness of those who lack understanding and fail to utilize their intellect.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am (6:122), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Is he who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom?
This verse emphasizes the transformative power of knowledge and guidance, equating the state of ignorance to spiritual death and darkness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively seek knowledge and understanding. Ignorance can lead to harmful consequences, both in this world and the hereafter. Just as physical death separates us from the living, spiritual death caused by ignorance separates us from the blessings and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
An ignorant person, lacking knowledge and understanding, is unable to navigate the complexities of life and make informed decisions. They may fall into harmful practices, engage in sinful behavior, and harm themselves and others. Moreover, their ignorance may prevent them from recognizing the signs of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) mercy and guidance, leading to a life devoid of purpose and spiritual growth.
Conversely, a person who seeks knowledge and understanding is like the living among the living. They are aware of their surroundings, connected to the divine wisdom, and able to make informed choices that align with the teachings of Islam. They are spiritually alive, constantly growing, and benefiting themselves and society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to pursue knowledge and enlightenment. It encourages us to engage in lifelong learning, to seek knowledge from authentic sources, and to apply that knowledge in our daily lives. By doing so, we can avoid the state of ignorance and spiritual death, and instead, become individuals who are alive and thriving in both this world and the hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. It highlights the detrimental state of ignorance, equating it to being spiritually dead among the living. By actively pursuing knowledge, we can avoid the harmful consequences of ignorance and instead, lead a life filled with purpose, growth, and enlightenment. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and to be among the living who are truly alive.
