مَنْ شَكى ضُرَّهُ إلى مُؤْمِن، فَكَأنَّما شَكى إلَى اللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ۔
Whoever complains of his distress to a believer, it is as if he has complained to Allah, the Glorified.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Complaining Of Distress)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ شَكى ضُرَّهُ إلى مُؤْمِن، فَكَأنَّما شَكى إلَى اللّهِ سُبْحانَهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking solace and sharing one's distress with a fellow believer. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore its profound implications in light of the Quran.
The word (shakaa) "شَكى" in Arabic means to complain or express one's distress. It implies seeking comfort and relief from the burdens of life. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to confide in a believer when faced with difficulties. By doing so, it is as if they have turned to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself for solace and support.
This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking help and support from fellow believers. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:45)
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
This verse highlights the significance of seeking assistance from Allah and His righteous servants during times of distress.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to seek solace in the company of believers, saying, (Quran 17:80)
And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers
This verse emphasizes the importance of finding comfort and support among the community of believers.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that sharing our distress with a fellow believer not only provides emotional support but also brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we confide in a believer, we are seeking solace in someone who shares our faith and understands the struggles we face. This act of trust and vulnerability strengthens our bond with Allah and reinforces our reliance on Him.
Moreover, confiding in a believer can have profound consequences in our lives. It can lead to the discovery of practical solutions, guidance, and moral support. When we share our distress with a believer, we open ourselves up to their wisdom, experience, and empathy. They may offer advice, lend a helping hand, or simply provide a listening ear. Through their support, we are reminded of Allah's mercy and His ability to alleviate our hardships.
Additionally, confiding in a believer fosters a sense of unity and solidarity within the Muslim community. It strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, as we come together to support and uplift one another. This unity is essential for the well-being of the ummah and the fulfillment of our collective responsibilities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of seeking solace and sharing our distress with a fellow believer. By doing so, it is as if we have turned to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself for comfort and support. This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran, where Allah emphasizes the significance of seeking help from Him and His righteous servants. Confiding in a believer not only provides emotional support but also strengthens our bond with Allah, leads to practical solutions, and fosters unity within the Muslim community. May we always find solace and support in the company of believers, and may Allah alleviate our distress and grant us peace.
