Hadith #6523

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العَجْزُ مَضْيَعَةٌ۔" This can be translated as "Inability is ruin." Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (inability) "عَجْزُ" refers to the state of being weak, powerless, or incapable of performing a certain action. It signifies the lack of ability or strength to achieve a desired outcome. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the negative consequences of being unable to fulfill one's responsibilities or duties.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of taking action and utilizing one's abilities to the fullest. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:143)

And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.

This verse highlights the mercy and kindness of Allah, who never burdens a person beyond their capacity. It implies that Allah has bestowed upon each individual certain abilities and strengths, and it is our duty to utilize them to the best of our abilities. Inability, therefore, can be seen as a failure to fulfill the potential that Allah has granted us.

Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of striving and exerting effort in various aspects of life. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the importance of belief, righteous actions, and mutual advice towards truth and patience. It implies that in order to avoid loss, one must actively engage in positive actions and strive towards righteousness. Inability, on the other hand, leads to stagnation and a lack of progress in fulfilling these obligations.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, "Inability is ruin," serves as a reminder for Muslims to recognize their capabilities and take action accordingly. It urges us to avoid complacency and strive to overcome our weaknesses and limitations. By doing so, we can fulfill our responsibilities towards ourselves, our families, our communities, and ultimately, our Creator.

For example, if a person possesses knowledge but fails to share it with others due to their inability to effectively communicate, they are depriving themselves and others of the benefits of that knowledge. This inability to convey knowledge can lead to a loss of opportunities for personal growth and the betterment of society.

Similarly, if a person has the means to help those in need but fails to do so due to their inability to empathize or take action, they are neglecting their duty as a Muslim. This inability to fulfill their obligations can lead to a loss of reward and a missed opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), "Inability is ruin," serves as a reminder for Muslims to recognize their capabilities and take action accordingly. It highlights the importance of utilizing our abilities to the fullest and avoiding complacency. By doing so, we can fulfill our responsibilities and strive towards righteousness, ultimately seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the strength and ability to overcome our weaknesses and fulfill our obligations.
