اَلأمَلُ حِجابُ الأجَلِ۔
Hope is the veil of death.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hopes And Aspirations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الأمَلُ حِجابُ الأجَلِ" which translates to
Hope is the veil of death.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) carries deep spiritual and philosophical implications that can be understood through the lens of the Quran.
Hope, or "الأمَلُ" in Arabic, refers to the feeling of expectation and desire for a certain outcome or result. It is a powerful emotion that drives individuals to strive for their goals and aspirations. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes it as the "veil" or barrier that separates us from the reality of death.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us of the transient nature of this world and the inevitability of death. In Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 57, Allah says, (Quran 29:57)
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
This verse serves as a reminder that death is an inescapable reality that every human being will face.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes hope as a "veil" because it can blind us from the reality of death. When we are consumed by our hopes and desires in this world, we may become oblivious to the fact that our time here is limited. We may become so engrossed in our worldly pursuits that we forget to prepare for the ultimate journey towards the hereafter.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of remembering death and preparing for the afterlife. In Surah Al-Mulk, verse 2, Allah says, (Quran 67:2)
It is He who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.
This verse reminds us that our actions in this world will be evaluated by Allah, and it is through our righteous deeds that we can attain success in the hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against being consumed by our hopes and desires to the extent that we neglect our spiritual obligations and fail to prepare for the inevitable meeting with our Creator. While hope can be a driving force for progress and motivation, it should not overshadow the reality of death and the importance of living a purposeful and righteous life.
Reflecting on the statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded to strike a balance between our worldly aspirations and our spiritual obligations. We should strive for success in this world while keeping in mind the transient nature of our existence. By maintaining a constant awareness of death, we can prioritize our actions and ensure that our hopes and desires are aligned with the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Hope is the veil of death
serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to maintain a balanced perspective on life. While hope can be a driving force for progress, it should not blind us from the reality of death and the importance of preparing for the hereafter. By aligning our hopes and desires with the teachings of Islam, we can lead purposeful lives and strive for success in both this world and the next. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us the wisdom to prioritize our actions in light of the inevitable meeting with Him.
