لِقاحُ الْعِلْمِ التَّصَوُّرُ والفَهْمُ۔
The conception of knowledge is imagination and understanding.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The conception of knowledge is imagination and understanding.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (tasawwur) "تَصَوُّرُ" in the Hadith refers to imagination or visualization. It implies the ability to form mental images or concepts. Imagination plays a crucial role in the process of acquiring knowledge. It allows us to visualize abstract concepts, making them more tangible and comprehensible. Through imagination, we can grasp complex ideas and connect them to our own experiences.
The word (fahm) "فَهْمُ" in the Hadith refers to understanding or comprehension. It signifies the ability to grasp the meaning and significance of knowledge. Understanding goes beyond mere memorization or accumulation of facts. It involves deep reflection, analysis, and internalization of knowledge, enabling us to apply it in practical situations.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the importance of imagination and understanding in the acquisition of knowledge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43),
And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
This verse emphasizes the role of understanding in comprehending the lessons and examples presented in the Quran.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:164), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.
This verse highlights the importance of reflection and contemplation in recognizing the signs of Allah's creation and gaining knowledge from them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that knowledge is not limited to mere information or facts. It involves the ability to imagine and visualize concepts and ideas, as well as to comprehend their deeper meanings and implications. Imagination allows us to explore the depths of knowledge, while understanding enables us to apply that knowledge effectively in our lives.
For example, when studying the concept of justice in Islam, imagination helps us visualize scenarios where justice is upheld or violated. Understanding then enables us to analyze the principles of justice in the Quran and Sunnah, and apply them to real-life situations. This combination of imagination and understanding allows us to grasp the essence of justice and work towards its establishment in society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of active engagement with knowledge. It encourages Muslims to go beyond passive reception of information and instead actively imagine, reflect, and comprehend the knowledge they seek. This approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper connection with the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the conception of knowledge involves both imagination and understanding. Imagination allows us to visualize and conceptualize knowledge, while understanding enables us to comprehend its deeper meanings and implications. By actively engaging with knowledge in this way, we can develop a profound understanding of Islam and apply its teachings in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to acquire knowledge with imagination and understanding.
