Hadith #2081

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Greed leads to many flaws (or great sins).

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental consequences of greed and its potential to lead individuals towards committing numerous sins.

Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (hirṣ) "حِرْصُ" refers to greed or excessive desire for wealth, power, or possessions. It is a state of covetousness that drives individuals to relentlessly pursue their own interests without considering the rights and needs of others. The word (mūqiʿ) "مُوقِعٌ" means to be placed or situated, indicating that greed has a firm hold on those who indulge in it. The word (kathīr) "كَثيرِ" means many or numerous, emphasizing the multitude of flaws or sins that can result from greed. The word (ʿuyūb) "عُيُوبِ" refers to flaws or imperfections, while the word (dhunūb) "ذُّنُوبِ" means sins.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of greed and its consequences in several verses. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 63:9)

O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.

This verse reminds us that excessive attachment to worldly possessions, driven by greed, can lead us astray from the remembrance of Allah and ultimately result in loss.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Humazah, Allah describes the characteristics of those who are driven by greed, saying, (Quran 104:1-3)

Woe to every scorner and mocker who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

This verse highlights the delusion of those consumed by greed, who believe that their wealth will grant them eternal life and security. It serves as a warning against the destructive nature of greed and its ability to blind individuals to the transient nature of worldly possessions.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith echoes these Quranic teachings by emphasizing the negative consequences of greed. Greed is a vice that can lead to a multitude of flaws and sins. When one is driven by an insatiable desire for wealth, power, or possessions, they become blinded to the rights and needs of others.
