May Allah have mercy on the person who supports truth when he sees it, repels injustice when he sees it and assists his companion by truth.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a amazing Hadith that highlights the importance of standing up for truth, opposing injustice, and supporting others with the truth. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.
The Hadith begins with a supplication for Allah's mercy upon the person who supports truth when they see it. This emphasizes the importance of recognizing and acknowledging the truth, and not shying away from it. The word (haq) "حَقّاً" in the Hadith refers to the truth, which is in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages Muslims to seek the truth and follow it, as mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 42:
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
Furthermore, the Hadith emphasizes the duty to repel injustice when it is witnessed. The word (jawr) "جَوْراً" in the Hadith refers to any form of oppression, wrongdoing, or injustice. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that it is our responsibility as Muslims to stand against injustice and work towards establishing justice in society. This aligns with the Quranic teachings, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa, verse 135:
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
Moreover, the Hadith highlights the importance of assisting others with the truth. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that supporting our companions with the truth is a means of strengthening their position and helping them overcome challenges. This can be done through providing guidance, advice, or even speaking up for them when they are being treated unjustly. The Quran emphasizes the importance of assisting one another in righteousness and piety, as mentioned in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 2:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively engage in promoting truth, justice, and support for one another. It encourages us to be proactive in recognizing and standing up against falsehood and injustice, and to assist our fellow Muslims in upholding the truth. By doing so, we contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our duty as followers of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and support the truth, repel injustice, and assist our companions with the truth. May He shower His mercy upon us and guide us on the straight path. Ameen.
