Hadith #5557

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الصبر جنة الفقة" which translates to

Patience is the shield against poverty.

This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of patience in our lives and its role in protecting us from the hardships of poverty.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. "Sabr" is the Arabic term for patience, which encompasses endurance, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of adversity. And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan (76:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger from a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel.

Scholars have interpreted this verse to mean that those who are patient in this world will be rewarded with eternal bliss in Paradise, where they will be granted the purest and most refreshing drinks.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound connection between patience and protection from poverty. It encourages us to seek knowledge, acquire skills, and work diligently to improve our circumstances. It reminds us to be grateful for the blessings we have, rather than focusing on what we lack. Through patience, we develop a mindset of contentment and gratitude, which protects us from the despair and hopelessness that poverty can bring.
