(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the consequences of becoming attached to the material possessions of this world. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Whoever gains possession of something of this world loses much more of the Hereafter than what he possesses [of this world].

This amazing Hadith emphasizes the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and the importance of prioritizing the eternal life in the Hereafter.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (malaka) "مَلَكَ" refers to gaining possession or ownership. It signifies the acquisition and control over worldly goods, whether it be wealth, power, or material possessions. The word (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to the temporal world, the transient life we experience on earth. And the word (akhirah) "آخِرَةِ" refers to the Hereafter, the eternal life that awaits us after death.

To further comprehend the message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46:

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly possessions and emphasizes the importance of focusing on righteous deeds that will benefit us in the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us:

But whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allah is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?

This verse reminds us that the true value lies in what is with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter, rather than the temporary pleasures of this world.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the Hereafter over worldly possessions. When one becomes too attached to the material wealth and gains of this world, they risk losing sight of the true purpose of their existence. This attachment can lead to neglecting acts of worship, charity, and kindness towards others, which are the means to attain success in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect upon the consequences of our actions and the choices we make in this world. By focusing on accumulating wealth and material possessions, we may inadvertently sacrifice our spiritual growth and the rewards that await us in the Hereafter. It is essential to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations, ensuring that we do not become overly attached to the transitory nature of this world.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the Hereafter over the temporary possessions of this world. By recognizing the fleeting nature of worldly goods and focusing on righteous deeds, we can strive for eternal success and fulfillment in the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to prioritize our actions and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives.
