(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

نِعْمَ الطّارِدُ لِلشَّكِّ اَلْيَقينُ۔

This can be translated as,

Certitude is an excellent dispeller of doubt.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (taaridu) "طارِدُ" in the Hadith means "dispeller" or "remover." It refers to something that eliminates or eradicates doubt. The word (shakki) "شَّكِّ" means "doubt." It signifies uncertainty or lack of conviction. On the other hand, (yaqeen) "يَقينُ" means "certitude" or "absolute conviction." It represents a state of unwavering belief and complete trust.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of certitude and the detrimental effects of doubt. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),

Indeed, the believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.

This verse highlights that true believers are those who have firm faith in Allah and His Messenger, without any trace of doubt. They are the ones who dedicate their wealth and lives in the path of Allah. Their unwavering conviction drives them to take action and make sacrifices for the sake of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:260), Allah narrates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his unwavering certitude. When Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asked Allah to show him how He brings the dead back to life, Allah commanded him to take four birds, cut them into pieces, and place a portion of each on different mountains. Then, Allah commanded Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) to call the birds, and they all came flying back to him, fully restored.

This miraculous event demonstrated the power of Allah and strengthened Ibrahim's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) certitude. It serves as a reminder to us that when we have complete trust in Allah and His abilities, even the seemingly impossible becomes possible.

Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. Certitude is indeed an excellent dispeller of doubt. When we have absolute conviction in our beliefs and principles, it becomes easier to overcome doubts and uncertainties that may arise in our hearts and minds.

Certitude empowers us to face challenges and make decisions with confidence. It provides us with the strength to resist the whispers of Shaytan and the temptations of this worldly life. With certitude, we can navigate through the complexities of life, knowing that our faith is firmly rooted in truth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom. His certitude in the teachings of Islam enabled him to make sound judgments and guide the Muslim community during his caliphate. His unwavering conviction in the truth of Islam served as a beacon of light for Muslims then and continues to inspire us today.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of certitude in dispelling doubt. It reminds us to cultivate a strong and unshakable faith in Allah and His guidance. By seeking knowledge, reflecting on the Quran, and strengthening our relationship with Allah, we can attain the certitude that will enable us to overcome doubts and navigate through the challenges of life. May Allah grant us all the gift of certitude and protect us from the whispers of doubt.
