فَقْرُ النَّفْسِ شَرُّ الفَقْرِ۔
Poverty of the soul is the worst poverty.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Poverty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
فَقْرُ النَّفْسِ شَرُّ الفَقْرِ۔
which translates to
Poverty of the soul is the worst poverty.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of spiritual poverty and its detrimental effects on an individual.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (faqr) "فَقْرُ" refers to poverty or destitution, while (an-nafs) "النَّفْسِ" translates to the soul or self. The word (sharr) "شَرُّ" denotes evil or the worst form of something. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing that the poverty of the soul is the most severe and harmful form of poverty.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children.
This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly possessions and the distractions they bring. Material wealth alone does not bring true contentment and fulfillment.
In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
And say: My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking spiritual sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and relying on His guidance and support.
The poverty of the soul refers to a state where one's heart and soul are devoid of true faith, righteousness, and spiritual connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a state of emptiness, where material possessions and worldly desires become the sole focus, leading to a neglect of one's spiritual well-being.
When an individual is spiritually impoverished, they may engage in unethical and immoral behavior, neglect their religious obligations, and become consumed by worldly pursuits. This spiritual poverty leads to a loss of inner peace, contentment, and purpose in life. It creates a void that cannot be filled by material wealth or worldly achievements.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and deep understanding of Islam, reminds us of the importance of nurturing our souls and prioritizing our spiritual growth. He encourages us to seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through acts of worship, remembrance, and self-reflection.
By focusing on our spiritual well-being, we can attain true richness and contentment in this life and the hereafter. The consequences of neglecting our souls are severe, as we risk losing the ultimate purpose of our existence and falling into a state of perpetual dissatisfaction and emptiness.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate a rich and vibrant spiritual life by immersing ourselves in the teachings of the Quran and the practices of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the worst form of poverty and attain true prosperity in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to overcome the poverty of the soul.
