(Ghurar al-Hikam: Leniency And Gentleness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Mani ista'mala ar-riqqa, istadarra ar-rizq.
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who employs leniency causes sustenance to flow [in abundance].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word "ista'mala" in the Hadith refers to employing or utilizing something. In this context, it signifies the act of employing leniency or gentleness in one's interactions with others. Leniency here refers to being kind, compassionate, and considerate towards others, even in challenging situations.
The word "ar-riqqa" means leniency or gentleness. It implies adopting a soft and gentle approach in dealing with others, showing empathy and understanding, and avoiding harshness or aggression.
The word "istadarra" means to cause something to flow or to make something abundant. In the context of the Hadith, it refers to the abundance of sustenance or provision that is granted to those who employ leniency in their interactions with others.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of kindness, compassion, and gentleness in our interactions with others. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 3:159)
And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you
This verse highlights the effectiveness of employing leniency and gentleness in dealing with others, as it strengthens relationships and fosters unity.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises abundant provision to those who are kind and gentle. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 42:43)
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience and forgiveness, which are closely related to leniency and gentleness. Allah assures us that those who possess these qualities will be blessed with abundant sustenance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the connection between our behavior towards others and the abundance of provision we receive from Allah. When we employ leniency and gentleness in our interactions, we create an atmosphere of harmony and goodwill. This, in turn, leads to stronger relationships, increased cooperation, and a more productive society. As a result, Allah's blessings and sustenance flow abundantly.
Let us reflect on the practical implications of this Hadith in our daily lives. When faced with challenging situations or conflicts, we should strive to respond with kindness, understanding, and gentleness. By doing so, we not only fulfill the teachings of Islam but also open the doors to abundant provision from Allah. This Hadith reminds us of the importance of cultivating a gentle and compassionate nature, following the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the profound connection between employing leniency and the abundance of sustenance. By adopting a gentle and compassionate approach in our interactions with others, we not only strengthen our relationships but also invite Allah's blessings and provision into our lives.
