اَلطّاعَةُ لِلّهِ أقْوى سَبَب۔
Obedience to Allah is the strongest means [of attaining success in both worlds].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Obedience to Allah is the strongest means [of attaining success in both worlds].
This profound statement emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as the most powerful and effective way to achieve success in this world and the hereafter.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ta'ah) "طاعة" translates to "obedience" in English. It signifies willingly submitting to the commands and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity and devotion. Obedience to Allah encompasses following His commandments, avoiding His prohibitions, and striving to fulfill His rights upon us.
The word (lillah) "لله" means "to Allah." It highlights that our obedience should be directed solely towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the One who deserves our utmost devotion and worship. By obeying Allah, we acknowledge His sovereignty and recognize that He is the ultimate authority over our lives.
The phrase (aqwaa sabab) "أقوى سبب" translates to "the strongest means." It emphasizes that obedience to Allah is not only a means to attain success but the most powerful and effective means. It is through obedience that we can overcome challenges, achieve spiritual growth, and ultimately attain success in both this world and the hereafter.
To further understand the significance of obedience to Allah, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256),
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the importance of willingly submitting to Allah's commands without any compulsion. It emphasizes that true faith and success can only be achieved through sincere obedience to Allah. By holding onto the "most trustworthy handhold," which is obedience to Allah, we establish a firm connection with Him and secure our path to success.
Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran (3:31), where Allah says,
Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'
This verse emphasizes the correlation between love for Allah and obedience to His Messenger (ﷺ). By following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and obeying his teachings, we demonstrate our love for Allah. In return, Allah showers His love upon us, forgives our sins, and grants us success in this world and the hereafter.
Reflecting upon the Hadith, we realize that obedience to Allah is not a burden or a restriction, but rather a means of attaining true success and fulfillment. It is through obedience that we align our actions with the divine will, purify our souls, and strengthen our relationship with Allah. Obedience to Allah brings about numerous benefits, such as inner peace, contentment, and protection from harm.
Furthermore, obedience to Allah extends beyond mere rituals and encompasses all aspects of our lives. It includes fulfilling our responsibilities towards our families, communities, and society at large. By obeying Allah's commands, we contribute to the betterment of society, promote justice, and establish a harmonious coexistence.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of obedience to Allah as the most powerful means of attaining success in both this world and the hereafter. It highlights the importance of willingly submitting to Allah's commands and following His guidance. By reflecting upon the Quranic verses, we understand that obedience to Allah is a manifestation of our love for Him and a pathway to His mercy and forgiveness. May Allah grant us the ability to obey Him wholeheartedly and attain success in both worlds.
