مَن وَثِقَ بِاللّهِ غَنِيَ۔
Whoever relies upon Allah becomes free from need.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Reliance On Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَن وَثِقَ بِاللّهِ غَنِيَ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever relies upon Allah becomes free from need.
In this impactful saying , Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of placing our trust and reliance in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain true independence and freedom from worldly needs.
The word (wathiq) "وَثِقَ" in this Hadith means to rely, trust, or depend on something or someone. It signifies a deep sense of confidence and faith in the reliability and sufficiency of the object of trust. In this case, the object of trust is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Creator and Sustainer of all things.
The word (ghaniya) "غَنِيَ" means to be free from need or self-sufficient. It implies a state of contentment and satisfaction, where one does not require anything or anyone else for their well-being and sustenance. When a person truly relies upon Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), they find themselves in a state of inner peace and tranquility, knowing that Allah's provisions and blessings are abundant and limitless.
This Hadith is beautifully aligned with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of relying on Him alone. Allah says in Surah At-Talaq, verse 3:
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse affirms that when we place our trust in Allah, He becomes our ultimate source of support and provision.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa, verse 81, Allah states:
And they say, 'We hear and we obey.' And such are the successful.
This verse highlights the importance of complete reliance on Allah's guidance and obedience to His commands. Those who trust in Allah and follow His guidance are the ones who achieve true success in this life and the Hereafter.
When we reflect upon the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that relying solely on Allah brings about numerous benefits and blessings. Firstly, it strengthens our faith and deepens our connection with our Creator. By recognizing that Allah is the ultimate source of all provisions and blessings, we develop a sense of humility and gratitude.
Secondly, relying on Allah frees us from the shackles of worldly attachments and dependencies. We no longer feel the need to excessively chase after material possessions or seek validation from others. Instead, we find contentment and peace in knowing that Allah's provisions are abundant and that He will provide for us in the best possible way.
Thirdly, relying on Allah empowers us to face the challenges and trials of life with courage and resilience. When we trust in Allah's wisdom and plan, we understand that every difficulty is an opportunity for growth and a means of drawing closer to Him. We find solace in knowing that Allah is always there to guide and support us through every hardship.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of placing our trust and reliance in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we attain true freedom from worldly needs and experience the blessings of contentment, peace, and resilience. Let us strive to strengthen our trust in Allah and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives, for He is the All-Knowing and All-Wise. May Allah grant us the ability to rely upon Him wholeheartedly and may He bless us with His infinite mercy and provisions.
