اَلْمالُ وَبالٌ عَلى صاحِبِهِ إلاّ ما قَدَّمَ مِنْهُ۔
Wealth is a burden for its possessor except that which he sends ahead from it [for the Hereafter].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Wealth is a burden for its possessor except that which he sends ahead from it [for the Hereafter].
This wise utterance highlights the inherent nature of wealth and its potential consequences for an individual. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (wealth) "مال" refers to material possessions, including money, property, and assets. It encompasses all forms of worldly possessions that one may accumulate. The word (burden) "بال" signifies the weight and responsibility that wealth places upon its possessor. It implies that wealth can become a source of distraction, attachment, and potential harm if not utilized wisely.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Takathur (102:1-2),
The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you until you visit the graves.
This ayah reminds us that the pursuit of wealth and material possessions can consume us to the point of neglecting our spiritual obligations and the remembrance of the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.
This verse emphasizes the transient nature of worldly possessions and highlights the futility of excessive attachment to wealth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that accumulating wealth without considering its impact on one's spiritual journey can be detrimental. It urges us to reflect on the purpose of wealth and its potential consequences. Wealth, when used in the pursuit of worldly desires alone, can become a burden that distracts us from our ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
However, the Hadith also provides a solution to this burden. It states that wealth can be transformed into a means of reward and benefit if a portion of it is sent ahead for the Hereafter. This refers to acts of charity, spending in the way of Allah, and supporting noble causes that bring about positive change in society. By utilizing wealth in this manner, one can alleviate the burden and transform it into a source of blessings and spiritual growth.
The Quran supports this concept in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.
This verse illustrates the immense rewards and blessings that come from spending wealth in the path of Allah.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.
This verse emphasizes the concept of lending to Allah by spending in His cause, which will be multiplied and rewarded abundantly.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that wealth is a test and a responsibility. It is not inherently evil, but rather its impact depends on how it is acquired, utilized, and shared. By sending a portion of our wealth ahead for the Hereafter, we can alleviate the burden it places upon us and transform it into a means of spiritual growth, reward, and blessings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the potential burden of wealth and the importance of utilizing it in a manner that benefits both the possessor and society at large. It calls upon Muslims to reflect on their relationship with wealth and to prioritize the Hereafter over worldly pursuits. By sending a portion of our wealth ahead for the Hereafter, we can transform it into a source of reward and blessings, thus alleviating the burden it may otherwise impose. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to utilize our wealth in a manner that pleases Him and benefits humanity.
