لاخَيْرَ في عَزْم بِلا حَزْم۔
There is no good in [making a] resolution without determination.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Resolve)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاخَيْرَ في عَزْم بِلا حَزْم۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of determination and resolve in achieving success. Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith to gain a better understanding.
The word (azm) "عَزْم" refers to a firm decision or resolution. It signifies a strong determination to accomplish a goal or overcome a challenge. Without this firmness of purpose, our resolutions may remain mere wishes or empty promises. On the other hand, (hazm) "حَزْم" refers to the quality of being resolute and decisive. It implies taking action and making the necessary efforts to fulfill our resolutions.
To shed light on the significance of determination and resolve, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of perseverance and steadfastness in the face of challenges. It reminds us that success comes to those who remain determined and resolute in their pursuit of righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Whoever should think that Allah will not support [Prophet Muhammad] in this world and the Hereafter - let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?
This verse highlights the importance of relying on Allah's support and having unwavering determination in the face of adversity. It teaches us that true success lies in our commitment to our goals, even when faced with challenges and setbacks.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the Quranic verses, we understand that making resolutions without determination is futile. Merely setting goals without taking decisive action and making a sincere effort will not lead to success. We must combine our resolutions with unwavering determination and a firm resolve to overcome obstacles and achieve our objectives.
For example, if we resolve to improve our relationship with Allah, we must not only make the intention but also take practical steps to increase our worship, seek knowledge, and engage in acts of kindness and charity. Similarly, if we aim to excel in our studies or careers, we must not only set goals but also work diligently, persevere through challenges, and seek guidance from Allah.
The consequences of lacking determination can be seen in various aspects of life. Without determination, our resolutions may remain unfulfilled, leading to feelings of disappointment and regret. Moreover, a lack of determination can hinder our personal growth, prevent us from reaching our full potential, and weaken our relationship with Allah.
In contrast, when we approach our resolutions with determination and resolve, we are more likely to achieve success. Our determination fuels our efforts, strengthens our resolve, and enables us to overcome obstacles along the way. It instills in us a sense of purpose and commitment, leading to personal growth, spiritual development, and a closer connection with Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that there is no good in making resolutions without determination. We must combine our resolutions with a firm resolve to take action, make efforts, and persevere in the face of challenges. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of determination and steadfastness in achieving success. May Allah grant us the strength and determination to fulfill our resolutions and attain success in this world and the Hereafter.
