أفْضَلُ العَقْلِ الرَّشادُ۔
The best intellect is [that which leads one to] right guidance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best intellect is [that which leads one to] right guidance.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a sound and righteous intellect. Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (intellect) "عَقْلِ" refers to the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment. It encompasses the ability to think critically, make sound judgments, and differentiate between right and wrong. The term (right guidance) "الرَّشَادُ" signifies the path of righteousness and moral rectitude. It is the guidance that leads one towards the pleasure of Allah and the attainment of spiritual perfection.
The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the significance of a righteous intellect. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269),
He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse emphasizes that true wisdom and intellect come from Allah, and it is a great blessing bestowed upon those who possess it. It is through this wisdom that one can attain right guidance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, 'This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy.'
This verse narrates the incident of Prophet Musa (Moses) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and highlights the importance of intellect in making the right decisions. Despite being provoked, Prophet Musa exercised his intellect and recognized that killing the man was a result of Satan's influence. This demonstrates the significance of a righteous intellect in discerning between good and evil.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the best intellect is the one that leads a person towards right guidance. This means that a truly intelligent person is not only knowledgeable but also acts in accordance with the guidance of Allah. They possess the ability to discern between right and wrong, and they make choices that align with the teachings of Islam.
Having a righteous intellect has profound consequences in a person's life. It enables them to make wise decisions, avoid sinful actions, and seek the pleasure of Allah. It empowers them to resist temptations and stay steadfast on the path of righteousness. A person with a righteous intellect is not easily swayed by societal pressures or personal desires. They prioritize their faith and strive to live a life that is pleasing to Allah.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating a righteous intellect. It is not enough to possess knowledge; we must also apply it in our lives and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). We should strive to develop a deep understanding of our faith and use our intellect to make choices that align with the principles of Islam. By doing so, we can attain the best intellect that leads us to right guidance and ultimately, the pleasure of Allah.
May Allah grant us the wisdom and intellect to seek and follow the path of right guidance. Ameen.
