Neither are blessings taken away from you nor are you deprived of any comforts of life but because of the sins that you commit, and Allah is not unjust to the Servants.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights an important concept regarding the relationship between our actions and the blessings or hardships we experience in life. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Neither are blessings taken away from you nor are you deprived of any comforts of life but because of the sins that you commit, and Allah is not unjust to the Servants.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this wise utterance. The word (ni'mah) "نِعْمَةٌ" refers to blessings, favors, or bounties bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). These blessings can manifest in various forms, such as health, wealth, knowledge, and peace of mind. The word (ghadarah) "غَضارَةُ" refers to the comforts and provisions of life that make our existence easier and more enjoyable.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that these blessings and comforts are not arbitrarily taken away from us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Rather, they are a consequence of our own actions and choices. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

but because of the sins that you commit.

This implies that our sins and transgressions have a direct impact on the blessings and comforts we receive from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand this concept further, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Rum, verse 41:

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

This verse reinforces the idea that the hardships and difficulties we face in life are often a result of our own actions. Our sins and transgressions create corruption in the world, which in turn leads to the deprivation of blessings and comforts. This serves as a reminder for us to reflect upon our actions, seek forgiveness, and strive to rectify our behavior.

Another verse that supports this concept is found in Surah Al-Shura, verse 30:

And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.

This verse reminds us that calamities and hardships that befall us are often a consequence of our own deeds. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is just and fair in His dealings with His servants. He does not inflict injustice upon us, but rather, our own actions lead to the outcomes we experience.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we realize the profound connection between our actions and the blessings or hardships we encounter in life. Our sins and transgressions have a direct impact on the divine favors and comforts we receive. This understanding should motivate us to be mindful of our actions, seek forgiveness for our shortcomings, and strive to lead a righteous and virtuous life.

Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder of the mercy and justice of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Despite our sins, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always ready to forgive and grant us His blessings. It is through sincere repentance and striving for righteousness that we can regain the blessings and comforts that may have been lost due to our transgressions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the direct relationship between our actions and the blessings or hardships we experience in life. It emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, seeking forgiveness, and striving for righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize our shortcomings, seek His forgiveness, and lead a life that is pleasing to Him.
