مَنْ ثَبَتَتْ لَهُ الحِكْمَةُ عَرَفَ العِبْرَةَ۔
One whose wisdom becomes established understands the lessons [that can be learnt from the past].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wisdom)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man thabatat lahu alhikmatu, 'arafa al'ibrah.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding the lessons that can be learned from the past. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us explore the key words in this Hadith. "Thabatat" means to become established or firmly rooted, indicating the development and growth of wisdom within an individual. "Hikmah" refers to wisdom, which encompasses knowledge, understanding, and the ability to apply knowledge in a beneficial way. "A'rafa" means to recognize or understand, while "ibrah" refers to lessons or moral teachings.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of wisdom and understanding. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (2:30)
And [recall] when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'
This verse highlights the wisdom and knowledge bestowed upon Adam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) by Allah, enabling him to fulfill his role as a vicegerent on earth.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (27:15)
And We had certainly given to David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, 'Praise [is due] to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants.'
This verse highlights the wisdom and knowledge granted to the Prophets David and Solomon (عَلَيْهِمَا ٱلسَّلَامُ), enabling them to govern with justice and righteousness.
From these Quranic verses, we understand that wisdom is a divine gift that enables individuals to comprehend and apply knowledge in a beneficial manner. It is through wisdom that one can recognize the lessons and moral teachings embedded in the events of the past.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of wisdom in understanding the lessons that can be learned from history. By reflecting on the past, we can gain insights into the consequences of actions, the motivations behind them, and the impact they have on individuals and societies. This understanding allows us to make informed decisions and avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
For example, the story of Prophet Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Quran provides valuable lessons on patience, resilience, and forgiveness. Through his wisdom, Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was able to navigate through various trials and tribulations, ultimately attaining a position of power and authority. His story serves as a source of inspiration and guidance for Muslims, teaching us the importance of trust in Allah, steadfastness, and forgiveness.
Similarly, the story of Prophet Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and Pharaoh in the Quran teaches us about the consequences of arrogance, oppression, and the importance of standing up for justice. Through his wisdom and understanding, Musa (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was able to confront Pharaoh and lead the Children of Israel to freedom. This story serves as a reminder for Muslims to resist tyranny and fight for justice, even in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of wisdom in understanding the lessons that can be learned from the past. By reflecting on historical events and the actions of individuals, we can gain valuable insights into the consequences of our own actions and make informed decisions. The Quran provides numerous examples and stories that serve as a source of wisdom and guidance for Muslims. May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize and understand the lessons embedded in the past, and may we strive to apply this wisdom in our lives.
