لاتَبيعُوا الآخِرَةَ بِالدُّنيا، ولا تَسْتَبْدِلُواالفَناءَ بِالبَقاءِ۔
Do not sell the Hereafter for this world and do not exchange the eternal with the transient.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Do not sell the Hereafter for this world and do not exchange the eternal with the transient.
This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the everlasting life of the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures and gains of this worldly life.
Let us delve into the meanings of some key words in this Hadith. The word (tabi'ū) "تَبيعُوا" means "to sell" or "to trade," indicating that one should not compromise or sacrifice the rewards of the Hereafter for the fleeting pleasures of this world. The word (al-ākhirah) "الآخِرَةَ" refers to the Hereafter, the eternal life that awaits us after death. It encompasses the Day of Judgment, Paradise, and Hellfire. On the other hand, the word (ad-dunyā) "الدُّنيا" refers to the worldly life, which is temporary and transitory.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 86:
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.
This verse serves as a warning against those who prioritize worldly gains over the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. Such individuals will face the consequences of their choices and will not find any relief or assistance.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse highlights the temporary nature of worldly possessions and relationships, emphasizing that the true value lies in the everlasting good deeds that we perform for the sake of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of prioritizing the Hereafter over the worldly life. It urges us not to be deceived by the temporary pleasures and materialistic pursuits of this world. Instead, we should focus on building our eternal abode in the Hereafter through righteous actions and seeking the pleasure of Allah.
By adhering to this guidance, we can avoid falling into the trap of worldly attachments and desires. We should strive to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations. This means fulfilling our duties as individuals, family members, and members of society, while also dedicating time and effort to worship, seeking knowledge, and performing acts of charity.
The consequences of neglecting the Hereafter and prioritizing the worldly life are severe. We risk losing the eternal rewards and blessings that await us in the Hereafter. Moreover, we may become engrossed in materialistic pursuits, leading to a neglect of our spiritual well-being and a weakening of our connection with Allah.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should evaluate our priorities and make a conscious effort to align them with the teachings of Islam. We should strive to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual growth. By doing so, we can ensure that we do not trade the eternal for the transient and that we prioritize the Hereafter over the temporary pleasures of this world.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to prioritize the Hereafter and to seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives. May He guide us to make choices that lead to eternal success and protect us from being deceived by the allure of this worldly life. Ameen.
