(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

Action with God-wariness is never little, and how can something that is accepted [by Allah] be [considered] little!

This statement highlights the importance and significance of performing righteous deeds while maintaining a state of God-consciousness, or taqwa.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (amal) "عَمَلٌ" refers to actions or deeds that a person undertakes in their life. These actions can be of various types, such as acts of worship, acts of kindness, or acts of obedience to Allah. The word (taqwa) "تَقْوَىٰ" refers to the state of being conscious and aware of Allah's presence, and it encompasses fear of displeasing Him, love for Him, and striving to fulfill His commands.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that an action performed with taqwa is never little. This means that even the smallest of actions, when accompanied by a sincere intention and a sense of God-consciousness, hold immense value in the sight of Allah. This is because taqwa elevates the quality and acceptability of our actions, regardless of their magnitude.

To further understand the significance of taqwa and the acceptance of actions, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights that the true measure of nobility and superiority in the sight of Allah is righteousness, which is closely linked to taqwa. It is not one's wealth, status, or lineage that determines their worth, but rather their piety and consciousness of Allah. Therefore, it is evident that actions performed with taqwa hold great weight and significance in the eyes of our Creator.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the believers regarding the pilgrimage to the Kaaba, saying,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse emphasizes that the most valuable provision a person can take on their journey, whether physical or spiritual, is taqwa. It is through taqwa that one attains the true essence of righteousness and achieves nearness to Allah. Therefore, actions performed with taqwa are not only rewarded but also serve as a means of spiritual nourishment and growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that if an action is accepted by Allah, it cannot be considered little. This highlights the fact that the acceptance of our actions is not solely based on their outward appearance or magnitude, but rather on the sincerity and taqwa with which they are performed.

To illustrate this point, let us consider the example of a person who donates a small amount of money to a charitable cause with a pure intention and a deep sense of God-consciousness. Despite the seemingly small amount, this action may hold immense value in the sight of Allah due to the sincerity and taqwa with which it was performed. On the other hand, a person who performs a grand gesture of charity but lacks sincerity and taqwa may find their action lacking in acceptability.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that actions performed with taqwa are never little in the sight of Allah. It is the quality and sincerity of our actions, rather than their magnitude, that determine their acceptability. Therefore, let us strive to cultivate taqwa in our hearts and minds, and perform every action with a deep sense of God-consciousness, knowing that even the smallest of deeds can hold immense value and reward in the eyes of our Creator. May Allah grant us the ability to embody taqwa in all aspects of our lives.
