خَيْرُ الأُمُورِ (هذِهِ الاُمَّةِ) النَّمَطُ الأوْسَطُ، إلَيْهِ يَرْجِعُ الغالي وبِهِ يَلْحَقُ التّالي۔
The best affair (of this ummah) is [taking] the middle course; to it return those who have gone to the extreme and with it join those who have lagged behind.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Middle Course)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states that the best course of action for the ummah is to adopt the middle path. The word used in the Hadith to describe this middle path is (an-namatu al-ausat) "النَّمَطُ الأوْسَطُ". The word (namat) "نَمَطُ" refers to a way or a course of action, while (awsat) "أوْسَطُ" means the middle or moderate. Therefore, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the importance of moderation and balance in our actions and beliefs.
This concept of moderation is not only found in the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), but it is also emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 143:
And thus We have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you.
This verse highlights the importance of being a just and balanced community, which is in line with the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 78, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty.
This verse reminds us that our striving and efforts should be in accordance with the teachings of Islam, which are not burdensome or extreme. It is a call to follow the middle path, avoiding both negligence and extremism.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains the consequences of adopting the middle path in the second part of the Hadith. He states that those who have gone to the extreme will return to this middle path, recognizing its superiority and balance. On the other hand, those who have lagged behind will join this middle path, realizing its significance and guidance.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to avoid extremism in all aspects of life. Extremism can manifest in various forms, whether it be in religious practices, ideologies, or social interactions. By adhering to the middle path, we can maintain a balanced approach that is in line with the teachings of Islam.
For example, in matters of faith, adopting the middle path means avoiding both excessive strictness and excessive leniency. It means understanding the essence of Islam and its teachings, without falling into the trap of rigid interpretations or excessive rituals. It means striking a balance between the rights of Allah and the rights of His creation, recognizing the importance of both worship and good deeds.
In matters of social interactions, the middle path encourages us to be just, compassionate, and tolerant. It means avoiding the extremes of arrogance and self-righteousness, as well as the extremes of apathy and indifference. It means treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds.
By following the middle path, we can achieve harmony within ourselves and in our communities. We can avoid the pitfalls of extremism and find a balanced approach that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to strive for moderation, balance, and justice in all aspects of their lives. May Allah guide us all to follow the middle path and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
