Injustice is the most wicked vice.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الظلم الأم الرذائل" which translates to
Injustice is the most wicked vice.
This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the gravity and evil nature of injustice. Let us delve deeper into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (zulm) "ظلم" in Arabic refers to injustice, oppression, or wrongdoing. It encompasses any act that goes against the principles of fairness, equality, and righteousness. Injustice is a transgression against the rights of others, whether it be through physical harm, verbal abuse, or withholding what is due to them. It is a vice that corrupts societies and leads to the deterioration of moral values.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the gravity of injustice in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-An'am, Allah says, (Quran 6:152)
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling one's commitments and refraining from any form of injustice, especially towards vulnerable individuals such as orphans.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah states, (Quran 5:8)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do
This verse emphasizes the obligation of Muslims to stand firmly for justice and not let personal biases or animosity cloud their judgment. It reminds us that justice is an essential aspect of righteousness and that Allah is fully aware of our actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement regarding injustice being the most wicked vice serves as a reminder for Muslims to always strive for justice in their personal and societal interactions. Injustice not only harms the victims but also tarnishes the character of the perpetrator. It creates a cycle of resentment, animosity, and social unrest.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which is evident in his enlightening Hadith. He understood the detrimental consequences of injustice and the importance of upholding justice in all aspects of life. His leadership and teachings continue to inspire Muslims to this day.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be just in our dealings with others, whether it be in our families, workplaces, or communities. We must stand up against any form of oppression or wrongdoing, and actively work towards establishing a just society. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also contribute to the betterment of humanity as a whole.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be just and protect us from the evil of injustice. May we always seek His pleasure and follow the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble family.
