Hadith #3075

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحياء جميل" which translates to "Modesty is beautiful." This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims of all times and places. To fully grasp the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (hayaa) "حَيَاء" refers to modesty, shyness, and a sense of shame. It encompasses a range of virtues such as humility, decency, and a sense of self-respect. Modesty is a quality that prevents one from engaging in inappropriate behavior or speech, and it reflects a person's awareness of their moral responsibility towards themselves and others.

The word (jameel) "جَمِيل" means beautiful, pleasing, and admirable. It signifies that modesty is not only a praiseworthy trait but also possesses an inherent beauty that captivates the hearts and minds of those who possess it or witness it in others.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.

This verse highlights the importance of modesty in clothing, which is a manifestation of inner modesty. It reminds us that true beauty lies not in outward appearances but in the righteousness and modesty of our actions and intentions.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs both men and women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. This verse emphasizes the significance of modesty in our interactions and relationships, reminding us to be mindful of our behavior and to protect our dignity and honor.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty and importance of modesty in all aspects of our lives. Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we should strive to cultivate and nurture the virtue of modesty within ourselves.
