(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كافِلُ النَّصْرِ الصَّبْرُ۔" This can be translated into English as,
The guarantor of succour is patience.
Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (kafil) "كافِلُ" in this Hadith means "guarantor" or "one who ensures." It refers to someone who takes responsibility for a particular outcome or result. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the crucial role that patience plays in guaranteeing success or victory.
The word (nasr) "نَّصْرِ" means "succour" or "victory." It signifies the divine support and assistance that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants to His servants in times of difficulty or struggle. It is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and favor upon His believers.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find support for the exegesis of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:45)
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience as a means to seek Allah's assistance and support. It implies that patience is a key element in attaining victory and overcoming challenges.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-'Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 103:1-3)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience
This verse highlights the significance of patience as one of the essential qualities that lead to success and salvation. It emphasizes that those who possess patience are the ones who will ultimately be victorious.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that patience is not merely a passive state of endurance, but rather an active and powerful force that guarantees success and victory. It is through patience that we are able to persevere in the face of challenges, maintain our faith, and seek Allah's support.
Patience enables us to remain steadfast in our worship, to endure hardships with resilience, and to navigate through the trials and tribulations of life. It is a virtue that empowers us to overcome obstacles, make wise decisions, and stay on the right path. By exercising patience, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's plan and His divine wisdom.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that patience is not only a means to attain victory in this world but also a path to eternal success in the hereafter. It is through patience that we can endure the tests of this life and strive towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that patience is the guarantor of succour and victory. It is a quality that is highly regarded in Islam and is emphasized in the Quran. By cultivating patience in our lives, we can navigate through challenges, seek Allah's support, and ultimately attain success in this world and the hereafter.
