مَنْ قالَ بِالصِّدْقِ أنْجَحَ۔
One who speaks the truth becomes successful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ قالَ بِالصِّدْقِ أنْجَحَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who speaks the truth becomes successful.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sidq) "صدق" in Arabic refers to truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty. It encompasses not only speaking the truth but also acting in accordance with it. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in various verses. For example, in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119), Allah says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse highlights the significance of surrounding ourselves with truthful individuals and being among them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:181), Allah states,
And of those We created are a people who guide by the truth and thereby do justice.
This verse emphasizes that those who adhere to truthfulness are also just in their actions. It highlights the correlation between truthfulness and righteousness, as they go hand in hand.
When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) says,
One who speaks the truth becomes successful,
he is highlighting the immense value and reward of truthfulness. Speaking the truth not only leads to success in this world but also in the hereafter.
In the Quran, Allah promises the believers success and prosperity in various aspects of life when they uphold truthfulness. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-11), Allah describes the qualities of successful believers, and among them is truthfulness. Allah says,
Successful indeed are the believers...who are truthful in their testimonies.
This verse emphasizes that truthfulness is one of the key characteristics of successful believers.
Moreover, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah warns against spreading false information and encourages seeking clarity and verification before accepting and spreading news. This verse highlights the importance of truthfulness in communication and the detrimental consequences of spreading falsehood.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that speaking the truth is not only about our words but also about our actions. It is about living a life of integrity and sincerity. When we speak the truth, we gain the trust and respect of others. Our words hold weight and influence, and people are more likely to rely on us and seek our guidance.
Furthermore, speaking the truth leads to positive consequences in our personal and social lives. It fosters healthy relationships based on trust and transparency. It creates an environment of sincerity and authenticity, where misunderstandings and conflicts are minimized.
In addition, speaking the truth aligns us with the divine attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Allah is the Ultimate Truth, and when we speak the truth, we reflect His divine qualities. It strengthens our connection with Allah and enhances our spirituality.
On the other hand, when we deviate from truthfulness and engage in falsehood, we not only harm ourselves but also those around us. Falsehood breeds mistrust, confusion, and discord. It tarnishes our reputation and weakens our relationships. It distances us from Allah and jeopardizes our spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
One who speaks the truth becomes successful,
emphasizes the significance of truthfulness in our lives. It reminds us that speaking the truth is not only a moral obligation but also a means of attaining success and prosperity in this world and the hereafter. Let us strive to be people of truth, embodying the divine attributes of Allah, and reaping the countless blessings and rewards that come with it. May Allah guide us all on the path of truth and grant us success in this life and the next.
