الشَّفيعُ جَناحُ الطّالِبِ۔
The intercessor is the wing of the seeker [which helps him attain what he seeks].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intercessor and Interceder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The intercessor is the wing of the seeker [which helps him attain what he seeks].
This enlightening saying highlights the concept of intercession and its significance in the spiritual journey of a seeker.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (shafi'u) "شَّفيعُ" refers to an intercessor, someone who mediates on behalf of another. It is derived from the root word (shafa'a) "شَفَعَ", which means to intercede or plead for someone. The word (janah) "جَنَاحُ" translates to "wing," symbolizing support, protection, and assistance. Lastly, (at-talib) "الطَّالِبِ" refers to the seeker, someone who is actively seeking something, whether it be knowledge, guidance, or forgiveness.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
Here, we see the seeker, Prophet Musa (Moses), seeking Allah's support and assistance in his mission. This verse emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah's help and seeking His intercession.
Another verse that sheds light on the concept of intercession is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255), commonly known as Ayat al-Kursi. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
This verse highlights that intercession can only occur with Allah's permission, emphasizing His ultimate authority and knowledge.
Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The intercessor, symbolized by the wing, plays a crucial role in the seeker's journey towards attaining what they seek. Just as a bird relies on its wings for flight and protection, the seeker relies on the intercessor for support and guidance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, making him a perfect example of an intercessor. His teachings and guidance serve as a source of inspiration for seekers in their quest for spiritual growth and enlightenment. Through his intercession, he assists the seekers in reaching their desired goals, whether it be attaining knowledge, seeking forgiveness, or obtaining divine blessings.
The consequences of seeking intercession are profound. It enables the seeker to transcend their limitations and reach higher levels of spirituality. By relying on the intercessor, the seeker gains access to divine knowledge, guidance, and blessings that they may not have been able to attain on their own. This intercession acts as a catalyst for their spiritual growth and development.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of seeking intercession and relying on the support and guidance of the intercessor. Just as a bird relies on its wings for flight, the seeker relies on the intercessor to help them attain their desired goals. By seeking intercession, the seeker gains access to divine knowledge, guidance, and blessings that propel them towards spiritual growth and enlightenment. May we all strive to be sincere seekers and benefit from the intercession of the righteous.
