تَرْكُ الشَّهَواتِ أفْضَلُ عِبادَة وأجْمَلُ عادَة۔
Abandoning lustful desires is the best worship and the most beautiful habit.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Abandoning lustful desires is the best worship and the most beautiful habit.
This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-control and the abandonment of worldly desires in the path of worshiping Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (shahawat) "شَهَوَاتِ" in the Hadith refers to lustful desires, encompassing all forms of physical and worldly desires that divert one's attention from the worship of Allah. These desires can manifest in various ways, such as gluttony, sexual indulgence, materialistic pursuits, and excessive worldly attachments. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of abandoning these desires, as doing so leads to the highest form of worship and the most beautiful habit.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of controlling one's desires and urges. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (17:32)
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse clearly prohibits engaging in any form of illicit sexual activity, highlighting the need to control one's desires and adhere to the boundaries set by Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises, (49:12)
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse reminds us to control our assumptions and avoid spreading rumors or backbiting, which are driven by our desires for gossip and negativity. By restraining these desires, we can maintain harmonious relationships and uphold the principles of brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that abandoning lustful desires is not only a form of worship but also a beautiful habit. This means that restraining our desires becomes a part of our character and a reflection of our inner strength and piety. When we develop the habit of controlling our desires, we become more focused on fulfilling our responsibilities towards Allah and His creation. This beautiful habit enables us to prioritize our spiritual growth and seek the pleasure of Allah above all else.
The consequences of abandoning lustful desires are profound. By controlling our desires, we protect ourselves from falling into sin and transgression. We become more mindful of our actions and strive to align them with the teachings of Islam. This self-discipline leads to a sense of inner peace and contentment, as we are no longer enslaved by our desires and whims. Moreover, it strengthens our relationship with Allah, as we demonstrate our devotion and obedience to Him by resisting temptations.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense wisdom and knowledge possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His profound understanding of human nature and the importance of self-control serves as a guiding light for Muslims of all generations. We are encouraged to introspect and identify the lustful desires that hinder our spiritual progress. By abandoning these desires and cultivating self-discipline, we can attain the highest form of worship and adorn ourselves with the most beautiful habit.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to abandon our lustful desires and strive for excellence in our worship. May we emulate the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and become individuals who are characterized by self-control, piety, and beautiful habits. Ameen.
