غَيِّروُا العاداتِ تَسْهُلْ عَلَيْكُمْ الطّاعاتُ۔
Change your habits and acts of worship will become easier for you [to perform].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Habit)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
غَيِّروُا العاداتِ تَسْهُلْ عَلَيْكُمْ الطّاعاتُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of changing our habits in order to make acts of worship easier for us.
Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (ghayyiroo) "غَيِّرُوا" means "change" or "alter." It implies that we need to modify our existing habits and behaviors. The word (al-'adat) "العاداتِ" refers to our customary practices and routines. And finally, the word (at-ta'at) "الطّاعاتُ" refers to acts of worship and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ra'd (13:11),
Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.
This verse emphasizes the importance of self-transformation in order to bring about positive change in our lives. Similarly, in Surah Al-Insan (76:24), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And they are given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger from a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel.
Here, the mention of a heavenly drink symbolizes the rewards and blessings that await those who strive to change their habits and engage in acts of obedience.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect on our daily routines and habits. By making conscious efforts to change our habits, we can create an environment that facilitates the performance of acts of worship. For example, if we have a habit of wasting time on idle activities, we can replace it with beneficial actions such as reciting Quran, engaging in supplication, or seeking knowledge. By doing so, we make it easier for ourselves to engage in acts of worship and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Changing our habits also has a profound impact on our spiritual growth. When we consistently engage in acts of worship, it becomes a part of our nature and character. It becomes easier for us to perform acts of obedience because they have become ingrained in our daily lives. This transformation allows us to develop a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthens our faith.
Moreover, changing our habits can have positive consequences in various aspects of our lives. It can improve our time management skills, increase our productivity, and enhance our overall well-being. By prioritizing acts of worship and incorporating them into our daily routines, we create a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of changing our habits to make acts of worship easier for us. By reflecting on our routines and making conscious efforts to replace negative habits with positive ones, we can create an environment that facilitates our obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This transformation not only strengthens our connection with Allah, but also has a positive impact on our spiritual growth, productivity, and overall well-being. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to change our habits for His sake and make acts of worship a natural part of our lives.
