(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The best of actions is espousing the truth.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (afdal) "أفْضَلُ" in Arabic means the best or the most excellent. It signifies the highest level of goodness and virtue. The word (al-a'mal) "الأعمالِ" refers to actions or deeds. And the phrase (luzoom al-haqq) "لُزُومُ الحَقِّ" means adhering to or embracing the truth.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and righteousness in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah. Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse highlights the significance of speaking truthfully and fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah states, (Quran 22:30)

That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.

Here, Allah emphasizes the importance of adhering to His commandments, which include speaking the truth and upholding justice.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the superiority of embracing the truth in all aspects of our lives. It encompasses not only our words but also our actions, intentions, and interactions with others. Espousing the truth requires sincerity, honesty, and integrity.

When we embrace the truth, we align ourselves with the divine guidance and fulfill our purpose as Muslims. It leads to righteousness, justice, and harmony in society. By adhering to the truth, we establish a strong foundation for our faith and build trust among fellow Muslims.

Embracing the truth also has profound consequences on our personal growth and development. It cultivates humility, self-awareness, and self-improvement. When we acknowledge our mistakes and seek the truth, we open ourselves to learning and growth. This enables us to become better individuals and contribute positively to our communities.

Moreover, espousing the truth requires courage and steadfastness. It may sometimes involve going against popular opinions or facing opposition. However, the rewards of adhering to the truth are immense. Allah promises His blessings and guidance to those who uphold the truth, as mentioned in Surah Al-Qasas, (Quran 21:73)

And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize truthfulness in their actions and decisions. It urges us to seek knowledge, reflect on our choices, and align ourselves with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we not only attain the highest level of excellence in our deeds but also contribute to the betterment of ourselves and our communities.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to always espouse the truth and may He accept our actions and guide us on the straight path.
