Allah has not bestowed any blessing on a servant who then does injustice...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Allah has not bestowed any blessing on a servant who then does injustice with it but that he becomes deserving of it being taken away from him by Allah.

This enlightening saying emphasizes the consequences of misusing or being ungrateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ni'mah) "نِعْمَةً" refers to a blessing or favor from Allah. It encompasses all the blessings we receive in our lives, whether they are material, spiritual, or intellectual. The word (zalam) "ظَلَمَ" means to do injustice or wrong. It implies using a blessing in a manner that goes against the will of Allah or harms oneself or others.

To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah's blessings are tailored to our capabilities and capacities. When we misuse or abuse these blessings, we exceed our limits and commit injustice.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.

This verse highlights the ingratitude and negligence of individuals who forget the source of their blessings and only turn to Allah in times of hardship. Such behavior is a form of injustice towards the blessings bestowed upon them.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that Allah's blessings are not to be taken for granted. When we misuse or neglect these blessings, we become deserving of their removal. This removal can take various forms, such as the loss of wealth, health, knowledge, or any other blessing that Allah has bestowed upon us.

For instance, if Allah has blessed us with wealth, but we use it in forbidden or extravagant ways, we are being unjust with that blessing. In such a case, it is not uncommon for Allah to take away that wealth as a consequence of our actions. Similarly, if Allah has granted us knowledge, but we use it to spread falsehood or engage in harmful activities, we are misusing that blessing. Consequently, Allah may deprive us of further opportunities to acquire knowledge.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be grateful for the blessings we receive from Allah and utilize them in ways that align with His guidance. We must avoid any form of injustice or misuse that may lead to the removal of these blessings. By doing so, we demonstrate our appreciation for Allah's favors and ensure their continuity in our lives.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of misusing or being ungrateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. It urges us to reflect on our actions and ensure that we utilize these blessings in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and guidance to appreciate and utilize His blessings in the best possible way.
