— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما خابَ مَنْ لَزِمَ الصَّبْرَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who adopts patience does not fail.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (sabr) "صَبْرَ" in Arabic refers to patience, steadfastness, and perseverance in the face of difficulties, trials, and tribulations. It is a quality that enables a person to remain calm, composed, and steadfast in their faith and actions, even in the most challenging circumstances.
The concept of patience is emphasized throughout the Quran, and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly encourages Muslims to adopt this virtue. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:155)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse highlights the inevitability of trials and tribulations in life, and the importance of patience in overcoming them.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah states, (Quran 103:1-3)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes that true success lies in faith, righteous actions, and mutual encouragement towards truth and patience.
Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) says,
One who adopts patience does not fail,
he is highlighting the transformative power of patience in one's life. Patience enables a person to navigate through the challenges and trials of life with resilience and strength. It allows them to maintain their faith, uphold their values, and make wise decisions even in the face of adversity.
When a Muslim embraces patience, they are able to endure hardships without losing hope or falling into despair. They understand that every difficulty is a test from Allah, and they trust in His wisdom and plan. Patience empowers them to persevere in their prayers, seek guidance from the Quran, and rely on the support of their fellow believers.
Moreover, patience is not simply about enduring difficulties; it is also about actively seeking solutions and making positive changes. A patient person does not passively accept their circumstances but takes proactive steps to improve their situation. They strive to find solutions, seek knowledge, and make the necessary efforts to overcome challenges.
The consequences of adopting patience are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens one's relationship with Allah. When a Muslim demonstrates patience, they are showing their trust and reliance on Allah's guidance and mercy. This strengthens their faith and deepens their connection with the Almighty.
Secondly, patience cultivates inner peace and tranquility. By adopting patience, a person frees themselves from the shackles of anger, frustration, and impatience. They develop a calm and composed demeanor, which allows them to make sound decisions and maintain healthy relationships.
Thirdly, patience enables personal growth and development. When faced with trials, a patient person learns valuable lessons, acquires wisdom, and develops resilience. They become stronger, wiser, and more compassionate individuals.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
One who adopts patience does not fail
emphasizes the importance of patience in the life of a Muslim. Patience is a virtue that enables believers to navigate through the challenges of life with resilience, faith, and wisdom. It empowers them to endure hardships, seek solutions, and grow spiritually. By embracing patience, Muslims can find solace, strength, and success in both this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to adopt patience in all aspects of our lives.
