أعْجَلُ شَيْء صَرْعَةً اَلبَغْيُ۔
The quickest thing is the downfall of an oppressor.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أعْجَلُ شَيْء صَرْعَةً اَلبَغْيُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
The quickest thing is the downfall of an oppressor.
Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (sar'atan) "صَرْعَةً" means downfall, defeat, or destruction. It refers to the swift and inevitable decline of an individual or a group. The word (al-baghy) "اَلبَغْيُ" refers to oppression, tyranny, or transgression. It signifies the act of going beyond the limits set by Allah and causing harm or injustice to others.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46),
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, as well as the detrimental consequences of disputes and division among Muslims. When a person or a community engages in oppression and transgression, they not only lose the support and blessings of Allah but also weaken themselves from within.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors.
This verse highlights Allah's promise to support and elevate those who are oppressed. It is a reminder that the downfall of oppressors is inevitable, and the oppressed will eventually rise as leaders and inheritors of the land.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith is emphasizing the swiftness of the downfall of oppressors. He is reminding Muslims that the consequences of oppression are severe and that Allah's justice will prevail. The downfall of an oppressor can occur suddenly and unexpectedly, as Allah has the power to bring about their destruction swiftly. This Hadith serves as a warning to those who engage in oppression, urging them to reflect upon their actions and rectify their ways before it is too late.
The motivation behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement is to instill a sense of justice and righteousness among Muslims. He wants to remind them that Allah's justice is swift and that no one can escape the consequences of their oppressive actions. By highlighting the downfall of oppressors, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aims to discourage Muslims from engaging in oppression and encourage them to stand up against injustice.
The consequences of oppression are not limited to the oppressors themselves. When a society allows oppression to prevail, it leads to the deterioration of social harmony and the erosion of moral values. The oppressed suffer, and the fabric of society is weakened. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every Muslim to strive for justice and stand against oppression in all its forms.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of upholding justice and standing against oppression. As Muslims, we should strive to be on the side of the oppressed and work towards establishing a just society. We should remember that the downfall of oppressors is inevitable, and Allah's justice will prevail. May Allah guide us to the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to stand against oppression.
