اَلْحَسَدُ يُنَكِّدُ العَيْشَ۔
Jealousy makes life miserable.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Jealousy)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحسد ينكد العيش" which translates to
Jealousy makes life miserable.
This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of jealousy and its impact on one's well-being and happiness.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "الحسد" refers to jealousy, which is the feeling of resentment or envy towards someone due to their possessions, qualities, or achievements. It is a negative emotion that stems from a sense of inadequacy or a desire to possess what others have. "ينكد" means to make something miserable or to cause distress and hardship. And "العيش" refers to life, encompassing all aspects of one's existence.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the destructive nature of jealousy in several verses. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah says, (Quran 20:131)
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
This verse reminds us that the blessings and provisions bestowed upon individuals by Allah are a test. Jealousy arises when one fails to recognize that their own provisions are unique and tailored to their own journey. Instead of appreciating the blessings they have been given, they become consumed by envy towards others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Falaq, Allah says, (Quran 113:5)
And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
This verse highlights the harm caused by envy and the negative energy it brings into one's life. Jealousy not only affects the individual experiencing it but also has the potential to harm others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the detrimental effects of jealousy. When we allow jealousy to take root in our hearts, it leads to discontentment, bitterness, and a constant comparison with others. This mindset prevents us from appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah and hinders our ability to find contentment and happiness in our own lives.
Jealousy can also lead to harmful actions and behaviors. It can drive individuals to undermine or harm others in an attempt to bring them down to their own level. This not only damages relationships but also tarnishes one's own character and spiritual well-being.
To overcome jealousy, Muslims are encouraged to cultivate gratitude and contentment. We should focus on recognizing and appreciating the blessings we have been given, rather than fixating on what others possess. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of gratitude and contentment, reminding us that true happiness lies in being grateful for what Allah has bestowed upon us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to guard against jealousy and its destructive consequences. By recognizing the harmful nature of jealousy and striving to cultivate gratitude and contentment, we can find true happiness and fulfillment in our lives. May Allah protect us from the evils of jealousy and grant us the ability to appreciate and be grateful for His blessings.
