لِكُلِّ نَفْس حِمامٌ۔
For every [being with a] soul there is death.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Death)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic phrase from the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is "لِكُلِّ نَفْس حِمامٌ۔" which translates to
For every [being with a] soul there is death.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the universal reality that death is an inevitable fate for every living being.
To understand the depth and significance of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 35: (Quran 21:35)
Every soul shall taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.
This verse emphasizes the certainty of death for every soul. It reminds us that death is not a selective event, but rather a universal truth that applies to all living beings. It is a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), a trial through which we are meant to be tested and evaluated. Ultimately, we will all return to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and be held accountable for our actions in this worldly life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of this worldly existence. It compels us to reflect on the purpose of our lives and the actions we take during our limited time on earth. It encourages us to prioritize our spiritual growth and strive for righteousness, as death is an imminent reality that can arrive unexpectedly.
The recognition of death as an inevitable fate has profound implications on our perspective and behavior. It motivates us to live a life of purpose, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and striving to fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. It reminds us to be mindful of our actions, as we will be held accountable for them in the Hereafter.
Moreover, the awareness of death can serve as a catalyst for personal growth and self-reflection. It prompts us to evaluate our priorities, detach ourselves from worldly attachments, and focus on the eternal life to come. It encourages us to seek knowledge, engage in acts of worship, and strive for self-improvement, as these are the means by which we can attain success in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazing Hadith reminds us of the transient nature of this worldly life and the certainty of death. It serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims of all backgrounds, urging us to reflect on the purpose of our existence and to strive for righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to live a life that is pleasing to Him, and may He grant us a good ending in this world and the Hereafter.
